Andrea Teti comments UK Brexit vote for Greece's main newspaper, To Vima.

The translation of his comments is available below:

"It was always going to be a miracle if Remain won the referendum. Personally, I expected a Leave vote: if you bombard a population every day with xenophobic anti-immigration propaganda, if you destroy any security that working classes still had, and if you use 'Brussels' as a punching ball for everything and anything, how can you expect people to want to stay in the EU? It's amazing that the vote was even as close as it was."

"Having said this, the fact is that the EU has not been an attractive option for the working people of Europe for a long time: the ‘European Social Model’ is a distant memory, and European leaders prefer to blame foreigners and labour market ‘inflexibility’ while systematically ignoring issues like corruption and tax evasion. Their economic policies have been tried and tested for decades, and they have failed spectacularly."

"Brexit is a disaster of Britain’s making, but it is also a direct consequence of politicians ignoring people’s desire for social justice, for economic rights, and for governments that respond to the wishes of their voters. Even worse, politicians have tried to ride the wave of popular anger. Their unwillingness to listen to people’s concerns has isolated them and has weakened democracy."
