What do 'The People' Want? Understanding the Demand for Democracy, Religion and Government after the Arab Uprisings
“What do ‘The People’ Want? Understanding the Demand for Democracy, Religion and Government after the Arab Uprisings”
This presentation draws on public opinion surveys carried out by the Arab Transformations Project after the Arab Uprisings in order to reflect on what insights survey data can provide to the analysis of the causes of the Uprisings and the challenges these present both policy-making and academic analysis. A closer analysis than has previously been carried out suggests there have been fundamental misundertsandings in both policy design and in orthodox scholarship concerning the way democracy and the relationship between religion and government are understood in the countries surveyed. The presentation concludes reflecting on what lessons can be learned from the Uprisings.
