An article on the influx of refugees by Dr Ilia Xypolia
An escalating crisis within a crisis: Greece overwhelmed by influx of refugees
Dr Xypolia's article was published in the Turkish magazine 'Analist' and the journal 'Turkish Weekly'. It offers an insight into the current Refugee Crisis from the perspective of Greek politics including the country's relations with the EU.
"Apart from achieving a more equitable distribution of refugees across EU Member States, Greece’s long standing demand is to revise the Dublin Regulation, which stipulates that countries of first arrival are responsible for processing asylum claims and therefore places a disproportionate burden on the EU periphery. Overall, no matter how well prepared or not Greece was to handle the current crisis, one thing is certain: no country can deal with migration issues alone. Cooperation at the European and international levels is essential in order for the current challenges to be properly addressed."
